Skerries Islands
About
This three-island chain is largely uninhabited, and each is protected by the Skerries Island SPA due to the bird species that call this area home. St Patrick’s Island received its name from the actions of this famous Irish hero, who was believed to have founded a monastery on the island. Shenicks Island is the most southerly location in the island chain, and features a historic martello tower. Since 1987, the island has been protected as a wildlife reserve. Red Island is actually a rocky headland that is connected via roadway to the mainland area. A martello tower is featured on the island.
The conservation efforts taking place here may limit the level of freedom that travelers have in these protected areas. That being said, visitors interested in traveling to these areas are guaranteed an unforgettable experience!
